Latest News and EventsNew Tool Estimates Project Effort for IC's Physical Design Phases Cupertino, Calif., March 17, 2006 Following two years of development and trial usage on production IC projects from top ten semiconductor companies, Numetrics Management Systems, Inc. announced a major enhancement to its NMX Project Planner™ software. The newest capability automatically generates estimates of the time and effort required to perform both the front-end and back-end (physical) design of an IC development project. Called Split Team Synthesis, the new mode complements the tool’s existing Master Plan and Detailed Synthesis capabilities by automatically synthesizing the start and end dates and the staffing required at each point in time, for the back-end portion of the development cycle. Below is an example of Split Team Synthesis.
Many IC projects are organized as two distinct development teams that collaborate on a single IC design project but are often from separate companies. Split Team Synthesis accurately forecasts the amount of time and effort consumed by both the front-end and back-end teams and reports on each independently. Separate forecasts of the development cycle’s front- and back-end gives detailed insight into the staffing requirements necessary to achieve target cycle time goals. Moreover, accurate estimates of back-end effort enable managers to more efficiently plan the allocation and balancing of engineering resources among projects. This is especially important for back-end development organizations, which often demand exceptionally well organized and efficient resource assignment processes in order to achieve target throughput requirements. These organizations typically must schedule resources in a highly pipelined fashion because they must perform layout on myriad projects in very short time periods. Having reliable estimates of the number of resources required on each project is an essential element of a well managed IC development organization.
